Just a quick post to acknowledge the Mexican holiday of Cinco de Mayo!
Referring to the 5th of May, Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Mexican victory over France at the battle of Puebla during the French-Mexican War in 1862. It all started in 1861 when Mexico had to default on debts owed to a few of the European governments. France, Britain and Spain sent their naval forces to enforce reimbursements from the Mexican government, with Britain and Spain eventually agreeing on terms and withdrawing. France, under Napoleon’s command, continued her charge trying to take over Mexican lands and expand her empire. The war ended in a small town in central Mexico, known as Puebla de Los Angelas, were the French retreated.
The History Channel website states that in Mexico, “Cinco de Mayo is primarily observed in the state of Puebla. In the United States, however, it has taken on significance—and major commercial value—as a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with substantial Mexican-American populations.” The holiday is usually celebrated here with parades, parties, mariachi music, Mexican folk dancing and traditional foods such as tacos and mole poblano. Apparently, the biggest festivals in the country are held in Portland, Denver and Chicago.
